The Honestly Yum Gang

One of our favorite go-to websites for food inspiration + culinary know-how is HonestlyYUM. The editors, Karen, Todd + Erica were inspired to launch the site and share their perspective and passion for seasonal and unique foods and drinks and we're excited to feature them as our newest Guest Editors.

What are the three stress-free tricks you use most that you’ve shared with readers of the site?

1. Using a good sea salt like Maldon will add a subtle but noticeable difference to your cooking.

2. To make the perfect runny egg, just add a small splash of water into the pan after the egg has been cooking for a couple minutes and cover with a lid to steam the top. The whites cook through but leave the center runny.

3. Spice up your next dinner party by putting together a self-serve cocktail station using a batch of premixed cocktails.

It’s March! What are some of your favorite seasonal ingredients and preparations?

Todd loves to use all kinds of citrus fruits and will be using it as long as the season keeps producing great fruit. Karen’s looking forward to asparagus season and her favorite preparation is combining them with eggs.

Cheese Platter | Dinner Party

What’s the single most important thing to throw a perfect dinner party?

Preparation! Prep as much of the cooking before your guests arrive as possible. Certain recipes lend themselves to earlier prep-work better than others so keep that in mind when you are planning your menu. Think about what can be reheated or what ingredients can be prepped ahead of time and left to sit in the refrigerator or on the counter without compromising flavor and texture.

What would be your ideal dinner party guest list and menu?

Steph Curry: Carrot Soup from Steph's wife, Ayesha Curry's blog.

Fred Flinstone: Brontosaurus Burgers

Mei Lin and her winning dessert from Top Chef finale: Strawberry Lime Curd, Toasted Yogurt, Milk Crumble, Mint

It’s Happy Hour. What’s your drink of choice?

Lately, with this warm California weather I've been all about the Dark and Stormy. Given the name, it sounds counter intuitive, but rum, ginger beer and a little bit of lime is about as refreshing as it gets!!

Do you have a favorite local artisanal treat?

Lately, the HonestlyYUM team has been obsessed with Mother-in-Law’s kimchi. We even made a kimchi grilled cheese sandwich recipe for the blog!

If you could choose one of March’s featured ingredients to cook with, what would you choose and what would you make?

We would pick the Rick's Picks Phat Beets to add them to a faro salad with fresh herbs, roasted hazelnuts, roasted shiitakes and goat cheese.

Midnight snack of choice?

Have A Corn Chip. Best tortilla chips. Ever.

Roast Cauliflower

What ingredients do you think everyone will be eating in 2015? Are there any that you just wish would fade away?

Cauliflower is going strong and we think will continue in 2015. Kale might be experiencing some over-exposure, but we’re still loving it.

What’s up next for you? Any exciting culinary travels or ventures to share?

Karen and Erica will be heading to Portland and sharing all the yummy food they’ll be eating on HonestlyYUM and on Instagram!
